HUB- RACE ANALYSIS
GORDON LORD BYRON
9/2 early, Won at 7/2
Has repeatedly tackled better grade races at 7fl-8fl, so we must assume 6fl is on the sharp side unless conditions are reasonably testing which they should be here. He ran well in Deauville over 6.5fl, close up behind Lethal Force on gd-sft, and had a nice confidence booster last time. He must have an excellent chance of turning the tables and adding a 2nd Group 1 to his C.V.
Catches the eye at 16/1, made a big impression winnng his maiden in May but ran better than his position in the King George V Stakes at Ascot - despite pulling hard in a prominent position, hit the front 2 furlongs out and had plenty beaten in behind. His exertions eventually got the better of him as he faded into a 3-length seventh, but he has plenty more to give off his current mark and after a decent break we'd expect him to go well.
Haggas has won the Stewards' Cup before, a few years ago with Conquest and his general record in Goodwood sprints is excellent (8/13 win or placed since 2003). Rex Imperator has thrived since his switch, posting a career-best RPR last time when runner up to Tropics. A very strongly run 6fl will suit his hold up style perfectly, and that's exactly what he'll get here.
